By the way, Radio Theater can also be spelled Radio Theatre and it may also be referred to as Radio Drama or Audio Theater or any combination of the preceding.   If you are interested in listening to the real deal - actual programs from the 1030’s and 40’s - may I suggest www.radiospirits.com.  I get their free catalog mailed to my house.  The medium is the CD, and they run from a couple of hours to four hours or longer and cost anywhere from about 10 dollars to well over 20 dollars depending on how many episodes there are.  You can also check out the internet for many more options. And then there is internet radio and satellite radio – all good options if you want to hear some of this stuff.

Radio Theater – A revival?

Radio Theater or Radio Drama in its heyday was as entertaining as it gets for folks who wanted an in-home experience rather than going to the movies.  Radio had its beginnings in the 1920’s and in its prime, in the 1930’s and 40’s, some of the best stuff on the air-waves were the serial adventures of the likes of the Green Hornet, Superman and The Shadow as well as comedy and variety shows.  Talk to some of the older folks – those over 65 - and you’ll get an earful of a time before television when the listener actually participated in the story.  That’s right, you as a listener had to use your imagination to fill in the details: What did the heroine look like?
